Maritime Awards Gala 2017 displays Dutch maritime sector`s innovative power

On Monday night 6 November, the winners of the prestigious Dutch Maritime Awards 2017 have been named at the Maritime Awards Gala in Rotterdam. During this annual networking event, almost 900 maritime professionals saluted and acknowledged the Dutch maritime sector’s successes and innovative power. In addition to the five main awards, a one-off special recognition was granted to an exclusive project. The five Maritime Award winners are:

Maritime RNLN Van Hengel-Spengler Award 2017

The Maritime RNLN Van Hengel-Spengler Award 2017 was awarded to Lieutenant Junior Grade Jordy San José Sánchez for his operational innovation in the area of Target Motion Analysis. During his excellent and thorough research, San José Sánchez developed a new and more accurate method to determine the location of targets detected by passive sonar. He also contributed to the successful implementation of this innovation in the existing Combat Management System of the submarines and multipurpose frigates of the Royal Netherlands Navy.

Maritime Designer Award 2017

The Maritime Designer Award 2017 was awarded to Marijn Hage (Nevesbu) for his‘Volume Estimation Tool’ (VET). This method offers an innovative approach to the concept design of volume critical integrated systems, like submarines. The VET method has a flexible and modular setup, whereby it is applicable for assessment of impact from new issues during design. The jury appreciated his plan to further develop this method for the reduction of underwater noise in the design stage also, the more so, as it will contribute to reduction of harmful effects on marine life.

Maritime Innovation Award 2017

KOTUG was the winner of the Maritime Innovation Award 2017. The innovative method that KOTUG has developed for heat storage and re-use is new for the maritime industry. The simplicity of the idea is striking. A tugboat produces heat during operation, whilst requiring energy during stand-by periods. This required energy is usually obtained from electrical shore power at a considerable cost. The system is an eco-friendly and cost-effective solution. It reduces shore power consumption by 50%, thus equally halving CO2 emissions. This innovation has a high potential for other applications within our industry.

Maritime KVNR Shipping Award 2017

Wagenborg Shipping has won the KVNR Shipping Award 2017 with its versatile, innovative and ‘green’ cargo ship Egbert Wagenborg. This new EasyMax type shipis easy to operate, with maximum performance. An excellent presentation convinced the jury that Wagenborg Shipping has stripped its innovative EasyMax of all non-essential elements in the design. Key elements of this integral approach and innovation are: optimal loading capabilities, low fuel consumption, comfortable accommodation and the application of advanced technology – which also enables remote control.  The multipurpose ship was built in the Netherlands and has already led to much added value spin-off for the Netherlands in terms of knowledge and employment.

Maritime Award: KNVTS Ship of the Year

The Multi mission Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV) ‘Seagull-301’ has won the KNVTS Ship of the Year 2017 award. Designed and built by De Haas Maassluis BV and Ginton Naval Architects BV, the ‘Seagull-301’ is a very innovative vessel. This multi-functional platform is suitable for a wide range of military and commercial tasks for which it offers three operational modes: manned, remote-controlled or autonomous. An exceptional achievement of Dutch SME’s (Small and Medium sized Enterprises) spearheaded this year by De Haas Maassluis BV and Ginton Naval Architects BV.

One-off special recognition

In everybody’s view, the Allseas-owned heavy lift & pipe laying ship Pioneering Spirittruly embodies the Dutch industry’s innovative power. Something of a flagship if you will. Aspects like the ship’s nature, construction location and legal ownership, however make it hard to rank it in any of the  Maritime Awards categories. For this reason, the Stichting Maritime Awards Gala foundation has decided to grant the ship a one-off special recognition. It is to honour the extraordinary way in which this visionary project exhibits
the maritime innovative power of the Netherlands.

Maritime Awards Gala

The Maritime Awards Gala is organised each year by the Stichting Maritime Awards Gala foundation – representing Netherlands Maritime Technology, KVNR, KNVTS, Royal Netherlands Navy, Maritime by Holland, and the NISS. The gala is also made possible by its Gold Sponsors: Damen Shipyards Gorinchem, Europort, NNPC and Wärtsilä Netherlands.

Maritime Week

The Maritime Awards Gala is the highlight of the Maritime Week, which is held from 4 through 11 November 2017. The Maritime Week this year features the sharing of knowledge and to experience what vocational education and career opportunities the sector has to offer.
